Handling the Riyadh Heat

If this is your first Spring/Summer in Riyadh I can only imagine what you are now starting to go through.  Your feet, legs and most of your body is not only quite dry but very itchy.  Now that the heat is starting to get more intense you may find yourself with less and less energy.  You might have occasionally headaches too.  Don’t worry.  You are not alone and these are the very typical symptoms for anyone adjusting to the Riyadh heat of Spring and Summer.  I say Spring and Summer because although it is only early April, the temperatures are already getting into the low 100’s Fahrenheit.

So what can you do about these ailments and feeling of uncomfortableness?  First, hydrate often.  Drink plenty of fluids.  Never go out and about without taking a bottle of water with you.  Secondly, use a lot of good moisturizer or body lotion.  Apply it not only morning and night, but even at various intervals during the day.  And last but not least, invest in a good pair of sunglasses and don’t go out without them.  The day may not appear to be overly sunny but the sun’s rays here are much more intense than meets the eye (no pun intended).  It is common for people to come here with good vision and no need of glasses to require corrective glasses within one year (speaking from personal experience).

Good luck!  Everyone who has been here for a while has gone through these same symptoms and ailments.  The first season is the most difficult and then it seems that the body and skin adapt!
