Saudi Arabia: Spotlight on Al-Laith

I enjoy discovering and learning about the “out of the way” places in Saudi Arabia.  Most individuals immediately recognize the names of Riyadh, Jeddah, Damman and other larger towns in Saudi Arabia.  But how many have heard of Al-Laith?  Al-Laith, a town located 180km south of Jeddah on the Jazan highway made the news recently when the National Prawn Company supplemented a mass wedding ceremony for 28 couples!

There’s not a lot of information available on Al-Laith.  It is known as one of the best diving locations in Saudi Arabia and this video from 2010 certainly illustrates and validates the beauty under the sea off the shore of Al-Laith:

Furthermore a project is underway by the Ministry of Health for the construction of a new 100 bed hospital in Al-Laith.  The hospital is anticipated to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Due to its seashore location, Al-Laith is a port city and one of the places in the Kingdom where a water desalination plant is located to provide Saudi citizens with a valuable source of fresh water.
