Saudi Arabia: Happy National Day!

Today marks the 80th anniversary of Saudi Arabia as a modern state.  Given the Kingdom’s history going back to the 7th century when it became the cradle of Islam with the holies cities of Makkah and Medina, it is easy to forget that Saudi Arabia is still a young nation.

Saudi Arabia’s national day was not recognized as an official holiday until the year 2005 when King Abdullah declared it a day of recognition and celebration.  Prior to his decree, National Day passed as an ordinary day with little aplomb or celebration.  Since 2005 the nation has celebrations throughout the Kingdom marking Saudi’s history and heritage.

King Abdullah’s decision to recognize Saudi’s National Day also resulted in a new sense of pride for Saudi citizens.  On National Day many citizens come out to the streets to celebrate and are highly decorated in the green and white colors symbolizing the Saudi flag.  National Day has brought the people together with a greater sense of Saudization and pride in being a Saudi national.

Saudi National Day 2012 is a day eagerly looked forward to by all Saudis.  This year the celebrations have been extended an extra day making it an opportunity for Saudis to participate in many special events held around the Kingdom or alternatively taking a holiday outside of the Kingdom.

Saudi National Day celebrations will also go beyond the borders of Saudi Arabia.  Saudi citizens outside of the Kingdom will have their own celebrations in recognition of the day.  Saudi Students Associations will have functions not only for the Saudi students abroad but to be shared with others in order to give them a taste of Saudi history and hospitality.  Saudi embassies and consulates will have official functions of celebration.

American Bedu extends felicitations to Saudi Arabia and its people on this day of celebration.
