Saudi Arabia: War Zone or a Celebration?

Although it is not 100 per cent clear in the video, it is not unusual during the men’s wedding part y for the men to celebrate by shooting their weapons up in the air.  But what is somewhat unusual in this specific video is how many of the Saudi men have automatic weapons and how at least one of the men is wearing a vest for easy access to his weapons.

This is also an illuminating video in that it depicts the ease, quantity and type of automatic weapons that are available to Saudis within the Kingdom.

  1. This is so dangerous. One wonders if these men have any idea of what they are doing. It reminds me of some Monty Python skits, but at least those were skits.

  2. This tradition is so embedded in to the culture and heritage that I don’t believe they are aware of the risks!

  3. The upside is, save inside of a major city, Saudi is sparsely populated, so the chances of a round coming down and causing injury is, thankfully low.
Been to one wedding, this went on.
I was informed in conversation by our Qatari liaison officer of our installation commander’s attendance at another wedding where they fired their weapons. He said, “Your commander crawls well”, as the commander was caught unaware of the custom and began low crawling for cover.
I waited for him to sip his tea, after his expression of humor and replied, “Yes, his wife told my wife that he does crawl well!”
He choked a bit on his tea, laughing and choking at once.
For three months, “Your wife, his wife” would give him a paroxysm of laughter. 🙂

Carol, I didn’t see any vest. I saw shoulder holsters, some of quite high quality. Looked to be pretty much every male who wore a bisht had a shoulder rig with a handgun in it (looked like one or two double rigs, but didn’t look too closely).

  4. Wzrd – I may have used the term vest in error.

  5. AB,

Sounds just like northwest frontier province of Bakistan. Everyone invariably carries an AK-47 or Kalashnikov. I have seen kids as young as ten years old flaunting their weapons and firing in the air for no reason at all :)-

  6. When Saudis are shooting their weapons up in the air does anyone ever get killed or injured?

  7. @Sharon,

Unfortunately yes. And typically the most innocent are the victims of the stupidity.

  8. There are two times a year this similar behavior happens in the US, New Years Eve and Fourth of July. As a former police officer, I can tell you these are not good nights to work.

  9. Quite true, Kat. When we were living in SW Philly, a teen on our street got grazed in the calf by a 9mm round that ricocheted off of her front step on Independence Day.
After that, everyone stayed in on New Years eve and Independence Day.

  10. Yes, in their celebrating, they forget that what goes up, must come down.
