Saudi Arabia and dinosaur bones

As most of the Arabian peninsula was covered by a sea during the time of the dinosaurs there are no dinosaur fossils. The very few fossilized fragments which were found were of a maritime origin. Until now. A few bones of both a massive, Apatosaurus-like herbivore, and a tyrannosaur-like predator have been found in Saudi Arabia’s north-west of the red sea coast. The 72 million year old bones are considered significant because they constitute the first taxonomically identifiable dinosaur material described from the Arabian Peninsula.

“This discovery is important not only because of where the remains were found, but also because of the fact that we can actually identify them,” said Benjamin Kear of Sweden’s Uppsala University, who is the lead author a paper on the find published in the journal PLOS One.

“Dinosaur fossils are exceptionally rare in the Arabian Peninsula, with only a handful of highly fragmented bones documented this far. Indeed, these are the first taxonomically recognizable dinosaurs reported from the Arabian Peninsula,” Kear said.

  1. Rubbish? Its all imagination to befool people.

  2. What do you mean? Aren’t you happy that Saudi Arabia now has it’s own fossils? That there were some pretty cool dinosaurs roaming the coast of submerged Arabia 72 million years ago?

  3. What does the Qur’an say about dinosaurs?

…Does it tell us the Earth is 72 million years old?

Do you believe the Earth is 72 million years old? Where do the first man and woman fit into this? Did they evolve from apes?

  4. I find it fascinating and have been wondering when they would find some here in the land of fossil fuels. And everyone believes in fossil fuels!

  5. jb47323, The Earth is of course only six thousand years old as we can extrapolate from the ancient Jewish book your quran is based on via it’s plagiarism of the Christian bible and god is a practical joker who put these 72 million year old bones in the earth just to play around with your mind.

Sandy, don’t be silly, you know better: fossil fuels are also a practical joke… it takes only 4000 years to make oil and it is made from sand and is pumped into the ground by Jinn… Nothing to do with ”fossils”…

  6. Aafke, amazing isn’t it? I’m not talking about the dinosaur discovery either. 🙂

  7. Amazing? I am in danger of a permanent concussion due to the endless facepalming 🙄

  8. Having spent a month recently with some Saudi relatives I am no longer surprised at the lack of knowledge and education about the world in general. I spent quite a few days with ‘jaw drop’. My husband spent more than a few days trying to educate.

  9. I was enjoying read some of this blog post about kingdom of Saudi Arabia and like to see the foreign people discuss and sharing them different understanding , I am as Saudi citizen find some comments has very aggressive judgment so please let us enjoy this blog with learning more about each other and make new experience and maybe new friends .
I was before in USA several times and I have good friends there, I would like to meet them again.
Please stop saying bad thing against saudi and Muslims must stop calling USA by bad names , Saudi Arabia government and many citizens is far away from real islam and the sharia they use is not perfect as its used in proft Mohammed time they mix it with them for the king benefits and rolling family

I will be happy to explain what I can to you and I will ask any sheikh if necessary

    Good day to all

  10. Abdullah, It is nice to see your many comments here. If more of us would see both sides of the coin as you do we will all have a much better world. It is easy to be negative; it takes guts and a strong spine to be positive in the face of adversity.

  11. I would hope that by now any education Saudi realizes that the Koran doesn’t have anything to say about paleontology since 7th century Arabs wouldn’t have known anything about it. (The same of course is true about the Jewish and Christian Bibles.) Our modern world is driven by technology which is driven by science. The Saudi economy is based on oil and I would imagine they make their decisions in the oil industry based on modern science not on second hand legends from the Jewish bible.

  12. Maybe Abdullah’s comment actually belongs to another threat? Because I don’t understand what the problem with dinosaurs is. It is certainly not a negative post, on the contrary.

  13. Good morning
Dear Aafke-Art I don’t mean about this topic I mean some comments in general its sometime far away from the subject and makes very negative impact if someone needs that information.

    Good day to all

  14. Abdullah, ok, it’s just that most of us have accidentally put a comment on the wrong article at one time or other… it happens.
Discussions here can become a bit heated. I am happy you come here and comment, and make a positive contribution.
    Have a nice day 🙂

  15. My irst thought — what a waste of good fossils. 🙂 now only if they were someone where ore accessible, appreciative and educative.
But thinking again it could be used to educate and inform the kids and rekindle their imagination and understand the depth of this discovery.
